LIVE @ YardCity: The Make-Believe Spurs

Meet the
Make-Believe Spurs

See them LIVE @ YardCity on February 2nd!

What type of music are the Make-Believe Spurs?

We call it Alt-Folk or Americana. It's a mix of folk, bluegrass, country, blues, rock, etc.

What kind of songs/music can we expect to hear?

We try to have a lot of variety in our shows. We have a set featuring a ton of three-part harmony by artists like Caamp and Gillian Welch. We play Chris Stapleton, John Prine, and Bob Dylan tunes on acoustic. We also have a whole electric set with songs by the Black Keys, Grateful Dead, and lots of originals mixed in with all of it as well.

You’ve performed at Yard City previously— what is new with the band since last season?

We last performed at Yard City in March of 2020. A lot has changed in the world since then! Back then, we were touring as a duo (The Wallens). In 2022, we started the Make-Believe Spurs with my best friend Mavis Farr on drums and vocals, and it's been pretty special. We were scheduled to play a First Friday in April of 2023, but we got hit by a drunk driver in Phoenix the night before and weren't able to make it.

How long has the band been playing separately, and together?

We've been playing as a band since November 2022. Separately, Molly and I have performed together as a duo since 2017, and all three of us have been playing music for most of our lives. Mavis was in a great reggae band called Cry on Cue with Bernie Larsen (Jackson Browne, Lucinda Williams, David Lindley) for many years. I've been a full-time musician since 2011, and was fortunate enough to be awarded 2nd Place in the International Blues Challenge in Memphis.

Is there anything else we should know?

In addition to what they do with music, Mavis and Molly are also talented artisans. Mavis is an award-winning silversmith, and she makes beautiful jewelry utilizing recycled and ethically sourced materials. Molly is a fiber artist with some incredible crocheted creations, and I'm sure they'll both have some of their work on display. I'd also like to say that Arizona holds a special place in my heart; I've been coming out to play gigs at least once a year since 2014, and I have a few different songs I've written about the Copper State. Really grateful to be part of First Friday, and excited to share some music with everyone.
